World Vision distributing aid in devastated Mozambique

World Vision is distributing life-saving aid to those affected by the recent cyclone and flooding in Mozambique.

Millions of people need urgent help in the aftermath of the cyclone, and World Vision is distributing tents, tarpaulins and blankets. Access to the worst hit areas is still very difficult, and aid has to be flown in to some places.

Claire Rogers, World Vision Australia CEO, who is on the ground in Beira, Mozambique says “We have planeloads of aid arriving, and we are working to make use of locally available supplies, but with whole communities inaccessible except by air, things are taking longer than we would like.”

Hundreds of thousands of people are homeless, and there are now growing fears of starvation and diseases like cholera. The need for more food and clean water is becoming more and more urgent.

World Vision is particularly concerned for at least a million affected children. Many have been orphaned or separated from families, and there are serious concerns for their safety.

World Vision spokesperson Mark Bulpitt says “The safety and wellbeing of rescued children is our top priority. We are flying people in to set up child friendly spaces, to provide a safe place for children to find refuge and play.”
