UN Human Rights Office technical team to visit Venezuela
GENEVA (7 March 2019) – A team of five from the UN Human Rights Office is due to visit Venezuela from 11 to 22 March 2019 at the invitation of the Government.
During its visit, the team will seek to meet with Government officials, representatives of the National Assembly, civil society organisations and victims of human rights violations. The team will visit Caracas, as well as other cities in a number of states in Venezuela.
The visit follows an invitation by the Government of Venezuela to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet for an official mission. In countries where the UN Human Rights Office does not have a presence, it is standard practice for a preliminary technical mission to be deployed ahead of a possible High Commissioner visit. This is to ensure that the High Commissioner would be able to secure unfettered access to the people and places she would need to visit to be able to gain a clear understanding of the human rights situation in the country.
