World Vision calls on the PM to make the most of the world stage
World Vision is calling on Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to build on her recent announcement of an increase in the refugee quota, and use her time on the global stage to push for more meaningful change in the way the world treats refugees. World Vision has written to Ms Ardern, ahead of her meetings with world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly. We are calling on her to use those meetings to call on other nations to:
Increase their refugee quotas
Increase funding to host countries like Uganda, Lebanon and Bangladesh, who are taking in millions of refugees from neighbouring countries
Speak out against Australia over its detention centre in Nauru which undermines international refugee policy
And while World Vision welcomes the increase from 1000 to 1500 refugees from 2020, we are concerned that many of those most in need find it hardest to come here. We ask Ms Ardern to change the policy to:
Allow people from Africa and the Middle East to become refugees in New Zealand even if they don’t have family here, as is the case for people from other parts of the world
Introduce a specific sub-category within our quota for 100 unaccompanied child refugees
For those of you in New York, we would encourage you to ask Jacinda Ardern about these issues. For those back here in New Zealand, if you would like to speak with World Vision NZ’s National Direcotr Grant Bayldon, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me – details below.
