FIANZ strongly condemns the human atrocities committed by the Syrian Government and Russia in Ghouta
The Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ) strongly condemns the deadly attacks on unarmed civilian
population of Ghouta by the Syrian Regime of Bashar Al-Asad, assisted by the Russian fighter jets.
“What is happening in Ghouta is a crime against humanity. It is unacceptable that powerful members of the international
community continue to condone such unacceptable violations of international humanitarian laws and norms”, said Mr Hazim
Arafeh, President of FIANZ.
The brutalities committed by the Syrian and Russian regimes show their tyranny and blatant disregard for justice and
human rights. Innocent civilians are being murdered and traumatised.
In the continuing bombing of Ghouta, hundreds of civilians lost their lives which include many children. The Syrian and
Russian regimes have committed and are continuing to commit genocide on innocent civilians including thousands of women
and children. Syrian and Russian governments have lost their moral compass and their legitimacy as responsible members
of the international community. It is absolutely shameful that they are even disregarding the call by the UN for a
ceasefire in Ghouta so that medical evacuations and aid deliveries can be carried out.
The Federation call upon the New Zealand Government, United Nations and all world leaders to convince the Syrian and
Russian governments to a ceasefire and allow humanitarian aid to reach the victims.
“We also plead for humanitarian aid to reach those civilians trapped in Ghouta” said Mr Arafeh. We urge all members of
the New Zealand community and world community to contribute generously and extend financial and other emergency support
to their brethren in Syria through the official humanitarian organisations
