Inquest to Look at Shocking State of Mental Health in Prisons
Starting Monday 26 February an Inquest will be held into the death of a young man who bled to death inside Goulburn Prison amid allegations that guards failed to act on his calls for help.
The National Justice Project, a human rights law firm is representing the family of the man who died, Junior Fenika (Togatuki).
George Newhouse, Principal Solicitor at the NJP and Adjunct Professor of Law at Macquarie University, said "Junior was alone and desperate and one night cut himself with a razor blade. But the family are looking for answers to some very tough questions. How did he get the blade? Did his cries for help go unanswered? And are our prisons filled with mentally ill people who have access to shockingly limited health services?
“Our prisons need to be places where people can reform their ways or get well. Not a death penalty"
THE Inquest into the death of Junior Fenika (Togatuki) commences on Monday 26 February 2018 at Glebe Coroner’s Court, 44-46 Paramatta Road Glebe. The Inquest moves to Goulburn for 27 February – 1 March before returning to Glebe on 17 April 2018.
The National Justice Project is committed to fighting for justice for all in our society.
