Democrats Abroad New Zealand – Conversations on Gun Violence
AUCKLAND - DANZ is an official country committee of Democrats Abroad, and we strive to provide Americans abroad a
Democratic voice in our government and elect Democratic candidates by mobilizing the overseas vote. This year’s Annual
General Meeting will be held at The Good Home in Mt. Eden and via WebEx at noon on March 3, 2018. This meeting is a
members-only event, as regular organization business will be discussed, and elections will be held.
In lieu of having a speaker at our AGM, we want to come together and talk about gun violence - how it makes us feel and
what we can do to feel better. These conversations are hard, but we believe they’re necessary. We are sad and angry in
the wake of the Parkland shooting. Violence on this scale doesn't happen here in New Zealand, and it's all too easy to
forget that school shootings and mass shootings show American exceptionalism at its worst. Living abroad isn't always
easy, both when good or bad things happen back home, and it's particularly difficult seeing people you love feel unsafe.
As American ex-pats, we thank the people of New Zealand for their support. Members have reported seeing the American
flag flying at half-mast following the latest school shooting. The support of people in our new home means a lot to us.
