Nauru Government Threatens Police to Evict Mentally-Ill Child

Nauruan government officials, along with a Canstruct supervisor, this morning, (Friday, 5 January, have said that the Nauru police will forcibly evict a 14 year-old mentally-ill child and her family from the medical facilities at RPC 1.

The police are expected to return to RPC 1 at 2.00pm Nauru time.

The Nepalese family will be forced back to the tents and shocking conditions of the detention area of Nauru, RPC 3, where the child has previously attempted suicide. RPC 3 is not a safe environment and there will be no provision in the detention area to provide medical supervision of the child.

Doctors, who ordered that the child be placed in RPC 1 for al supervision last December, say they have no power to prevent Border Force and the Nauru government evicting the family.

Despite some changes to medication since in the last couple of months, there has been no improvement in the child’s condition.

“Border Force has the power to prevent this official form of child abuse, but it is complicit in the on-going mistreatment of the family,” said Ian Rintoul, spokesperson for the Refugee Action Coalition, "Canstruct has also been revealed as a willing accomplice.

“We are calling on Minister Dutton to intervene urgently to ensure this vulnerable family is not evicted and is not deprived of the assistance they need. There is an immediate risk to the child but the stress of dealing with the daughter’s illness is taking a toll on the health of the whole family."
