Traffic Restored Following Major Slip

ALTHOUGH traffic was backed up this morning at Kasavu Village outside of Nausori this morning (April 4) due to a massive vegetation slip, Fulton Hogan Hiways (FHH) was able to fully restore access within six hours.

The slip, which resulted from the heavy downpour overnight, caused trees and soil from the steep slope alongside the Kings Road, to erode on to the main highway. The slip rendered 70 percent of the road inaccessible to motorists.

FHH Rewa Depot supervisor said that his crew cordoned off the danger zone with cones and precautionary road signs at 5:30am.

“As soon as we received the text we organised transport for the crew, got the road signs, chainsaw and cones and arranged for a medium excavator and three six wheeler trucks,” Mr Suliasi Lesianavanua said.

“The crew used a chainsaw to clear the fallen trees and removed the soil slip with a medium excavator,” he added.

A crew of six FHH men directed traffic until the excavator arrived.

“There is one crew on standby at the Rewa Depot that is installing road signs in flooded areas and is ready to reopen block roads if the need arises,” Mr Lesianavanua added.

Fulton Hogan Hiways is working closely with the Fiji Roads Authority to restore access to roads affected by the current heavy downpour.
