Edward Street gets a facelift
When local authorities barred vehicles from commuting through the century-old Stinson Parade Bridge in Suva three years
ago in 2012, traffic had to be diverted. The adjoining road running between the Post Fiji and Telecom Fiji buildings has
shouldered more than its share of the weight of light and heavy vehicles.
Edward Street in the heart of Suva gets a facelift.
While the iconic Stinson Bridge awaits demolition later this year, the Edward Street detour is getting a much-needed
facelift. Fulton Hogan Hiways has begun upgrading 105 meters of Edward Street. The stretch under construction begins
from the corner of Stinson Parade through to the Central Street junction.
FHH Operations Manager Phil Tombs said that prior to the upgrade the road was riddled with potholes and as ‘bandaid’
patches produced heavily uneven surfaces, it prevented the proper flow of water into the drains.
The upgrade, which also involves foam stabilization, meant excavating 13 meters by 500 meters of Edward Street. But
before work commenced, it was necessary that Fulton Hogan Hiways detect hidden power cables and water pipes beneath the
excavated surface.
The company used cable locators to establish utility lines underground to prevent unnecessary damages to concealed power
and water mains.
Fulton Hogan Hiways is working closely with the Fiji Roads Authority and continues to provide road maintenance for the
Central and Northern divisions.
