ITUC Condemns Barbaric Terror Attacks in Paris
The ITUC has condemned the barbaric terror
attacks in Paris overnight, which left more than 120 people
dead and many more injured. French President Francois
Hollande has described the attacks, which took place at six
different locations, as a « declaration of war » by the
so-called Islamic state, and declared a national state of
emergency.
Sharan Burrow, ITUC General Secretary, said, « We grieve for the victims of the Paris attacks and all other such atrocities.
The so-called Islamic state is seeking to export its murderous creed from Syria and Iraq to France and elsewhere. The global trade union movement stands in full solidarity with the people of France, who showed such extraordinary generosity and bravery even as the attacks were still underway, tending to the wounded and opening their doors to those escaping the atrocities. This spirit, and the determination of people everywhere to protect fundamental freedoms, is an inspiration to all. Democracy, dialogue and the universal values of human rights and freedoms must and will prevail over the brutality that was witnessed once again last night in Paris. »
