AUSTRALIA WELCOMES WORLD’S BEST FOR THE 2015 NETBALL WORLD CUP
Australia will welcome the Silver Ferns to Sydney next week, as they join 15 other teams from around the world – Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania – to compete at the pinnacle event for international netball, the Netball World Cup.
“The Australian Government is proud to support the 2015 Netball World Cup. It is not only an opportunity to welcome our friends and neighbours to Australia but also a chance to strengthen the bonds between us through our shared love of sport.” said Australian High Commissioner to New Zealand, Michael Potts. “There is no doubt we will once again be treated to that unique Australia and New Zealand sporting rivalry contested by world class sportspersons.”
Some of the world’s best netballers will be in Sydney vying to take home the most coveted prize in international netball. The Australian Diamonds will go into this year’s event as the reigning champions. Australia beat New Zealand at the last 2011 Netball World Cup final by the narrowest of margins - a single point.
Netball is the world’s leading participation sport for women and girls and is a tool of empowerment for young women everywhere. On 25 June 2015, the Australian Government launched the Australian Sports Diplomacy Strategy 2015 2018. At the launch, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced AUD$250,000 was to be provided to Netball Australia to assist competing nations Samoa, Sri Lanka, Malawi, Uganda and Zambia with the costs of participation in the Netball World Cup 2015.
Australia is delighted to host the 14th Netball World Cup. People from across Australia and New Zealand will be able to show their support when the tournament kicks off on 7 August 2015.
