FAO assists ASEAN in finalizing draft ASEAN Vision and Strategic Plan towards 2025 for cooperation in food, agriculture and forestry sectors
01/07/2015 Jakarta, Indonesia – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is assisting the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) finalize a draft Vision and Strategic Plan for ASEAN Cooperation in Food, Agriculture and Forestry, 2016 – 2025.
Representatives of ASEAN discussed finalizing of the draft today with FAO Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative, Hiroyuki Konuma, during the Fourth Meeting of the ASEAN Ad Hoc Taskforce on developing the New Vision on Food, Agriculture and Forestry (ATF-FAF) towards 2025.
“The draft Vision and Strategic Plan for ASEAN Cooperation in Food, Agriculture, and Forestry (2016-2025), and the development of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), elaborates the strategic thrusts and associated action programmes based on the analytical work examining the issues and the challenges and opportunities for regional cooperation in key sub-sectors and in cross-sectoral domains of the food, agriculture and forestry sector,” Konuma said.
FAO and its partner GIZ have provided technical support to ASEAN in developing its vision, objectives, goals and priorities for cooperation among its Member States in food, agriculture and forestry as part of ASEAN’s overall goal of strengthening economic integration among its members. All ten ASEAN Member States are also Member States of FAO.
Konuma praised ASEAN countries for their leading contributions in achieving the MDG No.1 hunger goal this year, prior to the deadline. ASEAN countries reduced the proportion of chronic hunger to less than 9 percent, against the regional average of 12 percent, and contributed significantly to Asia’s success in meeting the MDG target.
Konuma also emphasized the importance to move forward to eradicate hunger through the implementation of the UN Secretary-General’s Zero Hunger Challenge, which is stipulated as one of the key priorities of the ASEAN Vision 2025 document.
