Israeli Minister of Agriculture’s Racist Remarks
Dr. Ashrawi: “Israeli Minister of Agriculture’s Pronouncements on Palestinian Bedouins Are Blatantly Racist”
PLO Executive Committee member, Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, referred to the recent statement made by the Israeli Minister of Agriculture, Yair Shamir, as a flagrant disregard of human rights and an expression of racism that has been inherent in Israeli politics for decades, betraying a total disregard for international law and the principles of universal human rights:
“Shamir’s statement on restricting the birth rate and imposing inhuman conditions on the Palestinian Bedouins are symptomatic of a culture of hate and racism in the form of deliberate demographic engineering with horrific implications.”
Dr. Ashrawi expressed serious alarm at the Israeli Government’s attempts to manipulate genetic and demographic trends among the Palestinian Bedouins of the Negev, along with the confiscation of land, destruction of villages and their forced relocation.
Dr. Ashrawi added, “Such attempts indicate a blatant disregard for the most basic norms of civilized human behavior. Combined with the ethnic cleansing of Area C and Jerusalem, the emerging picture is ominous indeed."
