Experience the tastes of Malaysia in your own backyard

For immediate release

Experience the tastes of Malaysia in your own backyard!

From mouth-watering Nasi Lemak and Beef Redang to sizzling Satay and tangy Laksa – Malaysian food excites the senses!

On Sunday September 28 Aucklanders can experience scrumptious, authentic Malaysian cuisine at the Visit Malaysia Year 2014 Carnival, at the ABS Showgrounds. Fifteen favourite local Malaysian restaurants/food sellers will showcase their best savouries and sweets. Best of all, it’s free to attend.

Zalina Ahmad, director of Tourism Malaysia in New Zealand, says Malaysian cuisine reflects the diverse cultures that call Malaysia home.

“It’s a fragrant and colourful mix of Indian, Chinese and Malay cooking,” she says. “The carnival is a great opportunity to experience new and interesting foods from a different part of the world.”

“Auckland is a blend of many ethnicities and Malaysians are part of that mix. Through our carnival we want to share some of the culture and heritage from our homeland that adds to the diversity that’s shaping this city,” she says.

Foodies can take in cooking demonstrations to learn the age-old secrets of making traditional Malaysian dishes, such as:
• Nasi Tumpang (omelette or meat with rice wrapped in a banana leaf and rolled into a cone shape. Traditionally this dish was the staple food for travellers or farmers in Kelantan to take to work)

• Teh Tarik or ‘Pulled Tea’ (a hot beverage of black tea and condescend milk. The ingredients are poured through the air between two cups until it reaches a rich, frothy texture)

• Roti Canai (a flatbread made using a skilful stretching and flipping technique).

If cooking is not your thing, there are weaving demonstrations, henna, free flow dance sessions and vibrant cultural performances. Plus loads of fun activities and competitions for kids.

For those planning a trip to Malaysia, staff from STA Travel and Malaysia Airlines will be available to offer information and advice. Or better still, enter the draw to win a trip for two to Penang – the food capital of Malaysia!
