Statement on the Release of Theo Curtis
U.S. Mission to the United Nations: Statement on the Release of Theo Curtis
24 August, 2014
We are profoundly relieved that journalist Theo Curtis is finally safe after nearly two years in captivity.
Theo was released during the same week that terrorists took the life of another journalist, Jim Foley. We know that the pain of those who knew and loved Jim is searing, and we underscore our determination to find and hold accountable the perpetrators of a monstrous crime.
Theo Curtis, Jim Foley, and other journalists travelled to Syria to shed light on the unspeakable horrors being committed against innocents – only to become victims of brutal forces unleashed and abetted by the conflict. So long as any American is held captive, the United States government will do everything in our power to bring them home safely.
Theo’s mother, on learning of her son’s release, said “My entire focus right now is on helping the other families of those still being held in Syria, and on taking care of my son.” Our focus will be the same.
