Canada: House of Commons online spying debate

OpenMedia statement on today’s House of Commons online spying debate

Commenting on today’s House of Commons debate about online spying, OpenMedia.ca Executive Director Steve Anderson said:

“We now know that Stephen Harper’s government spies on the private lives of Canadians once every 27 seconds. This astonishing figure shows government spying is clearly irresponsible, out-of-control, and hugely expensive for taxpayers. It’s time for Harper to take responsibility and defend our online privacy. He needs to immediately stop his government’s indiscriminate collection of our private information and withdraw his reckless online spying bill C-13 that would make it even easier for the government to spy on us without a warrant. Canadians care deeply about their online privacy, and we deserve a government that respects that."
