Environment Ministry Applauds Women's Contribution

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology (MECDM) has applauded women throughout the country for their contribution towards natural resource management on the eve of the International Women’s Day which is celebrated every year on March 8.

In a statement on behalf of the Minister and staff of the Ministry today, Permanent Secretary Dr Melchior Mataki said women across the country have made invaluable contributions towards resource management in the face of changing climate and weather patterns, reoccurring natural disasters and rapidly changing socioeconomic conditions.

Every year March 8 has been set aside to recognize women’s achievements and invaluable contribution to their families, communities, businesses, schools, churches, non-government organizations and provincial and national governments.

Women account for about 50% of Solomon Islands total population.

Solomon Islands women have the (traditional) daily roles of being mothers, food growers/collectors, fuel gatherers and care-givers thus environmental challenges such as biodiversity loss, rising sea levels, natural disasters such as cyclones, flooding, and tsunami events affect them and subsequently their families and the country as a whole.

“We recognize and acknowledge the commitment of all women in the country working to meet the goals and objectives of the Government and in particular MECDM. We shall continue to improve our partnership with women leaders and our women-folk in implementing our activities,” Mr Mataki said.
