The Smell Of The Gas, The Roar Of The Crowd

Motorsport’s most exciting event, the Formula 1 Grand Prix, brings the glitz and glamour to Malaysia once again. The 16th annual Formula 1 Petronas Malaysia Grand Prix will transform the Sepang International Circuit in Selangor into one of the most sought-after and star-studded locations in Asia from March 28-30, as celebrities, business and government leaders, tourists and plain old petrol-heads flock to the racetrack to catch the action during round two of the 19-leg world series.

Last year, Sebastian Vettel of the Red Bull-Renault team was victorious on the 56-lap, 310km circuit, closely followed by teammate Mark Webber and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton. Who will top the podium and spray the champagne this year?

“It’s always a thrilling event and a fantastic time to visit Malaysia,” says Zalina Ahmad, director of Tourism Malaysia in New Zealand. “We love to welcome visitors from all over the world to see the very best drivers in action on this very challenging circuit and warmly encourage them to arrive early or stay on to experience some of the many other attractions Malaysia has to offer.”

In addition to the Grand Prix there is a packed programme of events in the weeks beforehand, including the four-venue Formula 1 roadshow “Sepang Comes Alive”, which will give fans a glimpse of what they can expect during race week such as games, a 3D exhibition and the hugely popular F1 Simulator Challenge. The top 10 fastest drivers will compete in a grand finale at the circuit on March 29, with the victor taking away a Nissan Almera NISMO valued at NZ$33,000.

Other events include opportunities to meet the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 team, an airshow performed by KRISAKTI, Malaysia’s first fulltime national air display team, two support races – the Porsche Asia Cup and the opening of this season’s Malaysian Super Series – and a gala dinner and concert, featuring Scottish DJ and singer-songwriter Calvin Harris.

In addition, the nationwide 1Malaysia GP Sale is taking place from March 15-April 6. It’s a great time to pick up some bargains at shopping malls and department stores after the excitement of the race has died down.

Fuzion Travel is offering a Malaysian Grand Prix deal of a four-night escorted tour from $2699 per person share twin, including return airfares from Auckland to Kuala Lumpur, return airport transfers, four nights in a twin share room at the Park Royal, Kuala Lumpur (breakfast included) and covered grandstand entry to the Sepang Circuit on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
