Geneva - The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Malik Ali al-Badawi, a volunteer of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society, due to a landmine explosion near Abu Jubaiha in South Kordofan.
The incident took place while volunteers were on their way to respond to an emergency, providing assistance to people injured after an armed attack. Other volunteers were injured in the incident and were evacuated to nearby hospitals.
Every day, volunteers and staff of the Sudanese Red Crescent Society provide critical humanitarian assistance to save the lives of people across the country, including in the remotest areas of Sudan.
The Sudanese Red Crescent Society, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and the International Committee of the Red Cross condemn the use of anti-personnel mines by any actor, and call on all parties to abide by international law.
