Fijian teenager returns home after swimming pool tragedy

January 31st 2014

The teenager who died after being found in a swimming pool in Hamilton last Saturday is being returned to Fiji today.

Deepika Kumar is being flown to Suva, accompanied by the family who looked after her during her time in New Zealand and the Anglican Sisters of the home she lived at in Fiji.

The children and Sisters of St Christopher’s Home and the Anglican clergy of Suva will meet those travelling with Deepika at Suva Airport. Her funeral will be held tomorrow after a vigil through the night.

The 18 year old was to return to Fiji this week to begin study at university.

She had stayed in Wellington in the Anglican parish of Whitby while in New Zealand.

A service was held last night in South Auckland that remembered an angel who had brought joy to all who met her. Students from Anglican Schools, including Waikato Diocesan School for Girls, who travel to St Christopher’s Home to bring help had met Deepika in Fiji and again here in New Zealand on her visit.

A funeral director in South Auckland, Ann’s Funeral Home was thanked for his generosity as he had looked after the teenager and her travel home at his own cost.
