WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 29, 2014) —Save the Children applauds President Obama for putting children first in his State of the Union address last night. We commend his renewed call for universal Pre-K that would allow all American children to enter school better prepared to succeed. This is particularly important for children living in poverty, who are less likely to have quality early education opportunities and more likely to enter school developmentally behind. Too often, they never catch up.
His commitment to closing the inequality gap and unwavering support of women will also build stronger children by building stronger families.
"Every child, no matter if he lives in rural Appalachia or rural Africa, should have the same opportunities to succeed," says Carolyn Miles, President and CEO of Save the Children. "I am proud that our President recognizes this and is determined to make this a reality." In last night's speech, the President reaffirmed his commitment to ending extreme poverty around the world.
Save the Children is looking forward to the release of the President’s budget, and has called for increased investment in kids in domestic and international spending.
Together we can push to ensure that every child in America and around the world has the same chance for a bright future.
Please sign our petition and urge President Obama to increase investment in kids’ programs to the level they deserve.
