“Maritime History of Ukraine” series expands

“Maritime History of Ukraine” series expands to include the “Catherine’s Glory Ship of the Line” commemorative coins Kyiv,
December 20 - The National Bank of Ukraine put the “Catherine’s Glory Ship of the Line” commemorative coins into circulation. The coins will form part of the “Maritime History of Ukraine” series and are dedicated to the 230th anniversary of launch of the ship of the line “Catherine’s Glory”.
“By issuing commemorative coins, the National Bank of Ukraine primarily seeks to showcase the Ukrainian state and perpetuate our glorious past," noted Mr Viktor Nesterenko, Director of the NBU General Department for Regulation of Cash Circulation. He added that the “Maritime History of Ukraine” series reflected the history of navigation and shipbuilding on the territory of our country.
Mr Viktor Nesterenko said: “Ukrainian history is marked by numerous landmark events that inspire the Ukrainian people to take pride in the ancient traditions and take lessons in patriotism and dignity from our ancestors who have set an example of how to bring glory to their country”.
In 1778, the new Kherson shipyard equipped with the slipways that were used for building ships and frigates was founded at the mouth of the Dnieper River. In the spring of 1779, the construction of the 66-gun ship of the line Catherine’s Glory” was started. Four years later, in 1783, it was launched from the slipways of the Kherson shipyard.
During the years of operation of the Kherson Admiralty, which was in 1778-1827 one of the major centers of shipbuilding on the south of Russia, 34 ships of the line and 16 frigates were launched from its slipways.
The coin of 10 hryvnia face value is made from 925-fine silver, weight in fineness – 31.1g, quality “special uncirculated”, mintage – 5, 000 pieces. The coin edge is smooth with incised legends: the indication of metal and its fineness.
The coin of 5 hryvnia face value is made from German silver, quality “special uncirculated”, mintage – 30, 000 pieces. The coin edge is grooved.
“The silver coin packaged in a presentation case is priced at UAH 565, the coin made from German silver – UAH 25. All those who are keen to purchase these commemorative coins will be able to buy them through a wide network of sales offices (the regional branches of the National Bank of Ukraine and the National Bank of Ukraine’s distributors selling commemorative coins)”, noted Mr Viktor Nesterenko.
The coins have been created by Volodymyr Demianenko, Volodymyr Taran, Oleksandr Kharuk, Serhii Kharuk and Anatolii Demianenko.
