U.S. with Philippines Every Step of the Way, Rice Says
On November 8, a massive typhoon slammed into the central part of the Philippines, leaving thousands dead and millions in need of assistance. Days later, addressing a gathering at Georgetown University in Washington, U.S. National Security Advisor Susan Rice repeated some of President Obama’s words: “When our friends are in trouble, America helps.”
With its allies in the region, Rice said, the United States is working around the clock to manage the immediate crisis and to help the Filipino people begin to rebuild their country. “Recovery will be a long process, but the United States will stand beside the Philippines every step of the way — getting people back to work, rebuilding homes, reopening schools,” she said.
“America’s commitment won’t expire a few months or few years from now. The United States of America will be there, reliable, constant, strong and steady for the long haul. And together, with the people of the Asia Pacific, we will continue to advance the shared security, prosperity and human dignity that we all cherish,” Rice added.
