Future of the Pacific Plan

Future of the Pacific Plan

Majuro, Marshall Islands, 4 September, 2013:  The future of the Pacific Plan will be under discussion today, at a special meeting between Leaders and the Rt. Hon. Sir Mekere Morauta.

Sir Mekere was nominated by Leaders last year to lead an independent review of the Pacific Plan. After extensive consultations across the Forum’s sixteen members and two associate members, Sir Mekere will be reporting back with his principal recommendations.

Last month in Suva Sir Mekere told officials that the “region is at a crossroads” and the Pacific Plan needed more than ‘refreshing’. He said it needed to re-focus on “advancing the political principle of regionalism” to help implement “key, game-changing, drivers of regional economic integration”.

The Pacific Plan Review report is expected to be finalised and released after Leaders provide their thoughts on Sir Mekere’s recommendations for a new, politically-led, plan.
