Pacific Youth to Discuss and Plan the Future They Want at “My World, My SIDS: YES”

Nadi, FIJI, 03 July, 2013 – A year before the global Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) conference and young Pacific islanders are already gearing up to draft concrete suggestions which will feed into the global conference in Apia next year.

Thirty youth from Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Federated States of Micronesia, Samoa, Republic of Marshall Islands, Nauru, Cook Islands, PNG, Tokelau will gather in Nadi to deliberate and put together an outcomes statement for the global SIDS conference.

The five-day workshop is supported by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. It will be opened by the President of Fiji, His Excellency, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

This workshop is one of several meetings happening across the SIDS regions. The young people of the Caribbean were the first ones to benefit from such an unprecedented and intense experience. Their workshop was held from 26 June until 1 July 2013 in Kingston (Jamaica). The young islanders of the Pacific begin their deliberations tomorrow and finally, the Indian Ocean youth will meet in Victoria (Seychelles) from the 11 until 16 July 2013.
