Doctor Who celebrates 50th anniversary down under
The 50th anniversary of the legendary BBC television programme Doctor Who will be celebrated in spectacular style during Vivid Sydney. Kiwi fans who can’t be there on the night will be able to watch special screenings at many local cinemas.
On Saturday 1 June, the grand façade of Customs House at Circular Quay, Sydney, will feature 3D-mapped projections of Doctor Who as he travels through space and time, pursued by some of his greatest enemies.
Destination New South Wales has collaborated with BBC Worldwide Australia & New Zealand to create an evening of entertainment that also includes special cinema screenings of two episodes from the series. These will be simultaneously screened at cinemas in Australia and New Zealand at 7 pm NZ-time (5 pm Sydney time).
The featured episodes are from Series Seven Part 1: Asylum of the Daleks and The Angels Take Manhattan, in which the Doctor confronts two of his most terrifying foes – the Daleks and the Weeping Angels – and says a heart-breaking farewell to his companions Amy and Rory Pond.
NSW Deputy Premier Andrew Stoner says the one-night only celebration that will deliver a show-stopping, unique anniversary celebration for Doctor Who’s legion of fans.
The Doctor Who projections will start at 6.50 pm on the evening of Saturday June 1, featuring music from the TV show including I am the Doctor. This will be followed by five repeat projections shown at 10 minutes to each hour until midnight.
These will be interspersed with Move Your Building, an interactive projection produced by French design company Danny Rose, which will be beamed upon Customs House over the 18 nights of Vivid Sydney.
Sharon Wilson, Head of Marketing, Global Brands, BBC Worldwide Australia and New Zealand, says Vivid Sydney is the perfect platform for this anniversary celebration, which will see the Doctor projected 7 metres high onto one of the city’s most historic buildings.
Vivid Sydney 2013 is an 18-day celebration of light, music and ideas that takes place in Sydney from 24 May to 10 June. The festival is run by the NSW Government’s tourism agency Destination NSW.
