Electoral Bill to Address Deficiencies In Voter Registration

The Parliamentary Bills and Legislation Committee say the electoral system and process used in Solomon Islands national general elections does not meet the trust and confidence of the people.

The Committee's report into the parliament electoral provision amendment bill 2013, states that the whole system and process is in great need of change.

It says the electoral provisions amendment bill 2013 passed in parliament recently only seek to address part of the deficiencies identified in the process of registration of voters.

It says the country's current electoral rolls are vulnerable to manipulation due to double registration and therefore double voting because of the difficulties associated with the identity of voters.

The committee says this causes a lot of mistrust and lack of confidence in the whole electoral process and system.

The committee says the proposed introduction of bio-metric technology is a step forward in reforming the electoral system and processes.

The technology will be used to capture voters' identification information.

The Bills and Legislation Committee hopes this new measure will contribute to attaining an electoral system that is credible and trustworthy.
