March 19,
2013
Somchai Neelapaijit Memorial Fund, Justice for Peace Foundation, Towards Ecological Recovery and Regional Alliances (TERRA), Amnesty International Thailand will host a panel discussion entitled “Human Rights in ASEAN: Lessons Learned from the Disappearance of Sombath Somphone and Somchai Neelapaijit.” The event takes place on March 27, 2013, from 9.30-12.00, at Jitti Tingsapat Meeting Room, 1st Floor, Faculty of Law, Thammasat University (Tha Phrachan Campus). The panelists comprise Angkhana Neelapaijit and Witoon Permpongsacharoen. Moreover, a statement by Mr Somphone’s wife will be read during the event.
The objective of the event is to raise
awareness about human rights violation in the region,
enforced disappearance, the two cases themselves and to
commemorate 9th anniversary disappearance of Somchai in
March. Moreover, the event organizers want to send out
messages to ASEAN governments that they could not only focus
on the cooperation on economics while ignoring the human
rights violation in each countries. The cases of Sombath and
Somchai show the failure of the rule of law, transparency
and accountability of ASEAN.
