IFJ joins partner’s call for greater safety after news cameraman is attacked in the Maldives
The Maldives Journalists Association (MJA), an affiliate of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has
strongly condemned the attack on Rilwan Moosa, a cameraman with the VTV station in the national capital Male, while he
was reportedly covering a protest demonstration organised by the opposition Maldives Democratic Party (MDP).
The MJA has pointed out that attacks on journalists are becoming a disturbingly frequent occurrence during political
rallies in the country. The MJA is calling on the relevant authorities, notably the Maldives Media Council to initiate
steps to ensure a safe environment for reporting public events.
The IFJ supports the MJA campaign for greater safety for journalists amid the deepening political strife in the
Maldives, and urges authorities in the country ensure a safe environment so that journalists may perform their duties.
The IFJ represents more than 600,000 journalists in 131 countries
