Greenpeace response to news Shell breached EPA permits
Responding to the news reports that authorities in the US have issued citations against both of Shell’s Arctic drilling vessels due to repeated violations of air pollution permits this summer, Greenpeace International Arctic Campaigner Ben Ayliffe said:
"Shell was so concerned about the state of its aging Arctic drilling rigs that it lobbied the US to water down pollution requirements, but incredibly we now find they couldn’t even meet these. From day one this company has proven it is completely unprepared to operate in the Arctic. The time has come for the US government to pull the plug on drilling for oil in Arctic waters before we witness a Deepwater Horizon-style catastrophe amid the ice floes off Alaska.
"Time after time Shell’s inability to carry out even basic operations safely has made a mockery of its self-proclaimed ‘world-class’ Arctic project. As authorities in the US start an urgent investigation into the company’s programme, Shell's actions have given them all the evidence they need to cancel oil drilling in the Arctic."
