Fiji Constitution Trashing Incident
Editor,
With regards to the Fiji Draft Constitution burning matter, the people of Fiji and the international community have a very clear choice. Either to believe the Constitution Commission chair Professor Yash Ghai's version of events surrounding the confiscation and burning or that of the Military Dictatorship and its paid propagandist - like expatriate Australian "independent" journalist Graham Davis and handpicked Permanent secretary for Information Sharon Smith-Johns.
As the former Fiji Sun newspaper publisher Russel Hunter has pointed out neutral observers would " prefer Professor Yash Ghai's version" because "After all, he was there and Smith-Johns wasn't" (Letters the Australian 10/1).
I have no difficulty in preferring Prof Ghai's version.
I can find no reason why a man of Prof. Ghai's stature - a law professor and internationally recognised constitutional expert - would need to fabricate a story about the constitution burning in Fiji.
Fabrications have by contrast been the mainstay of the Military regime in Fiji and its spin doctors.
Sincerely,
Rajend Naidu
