Taiwan Again Urges China, Japan To Show Restraint In Diaoyutais Row
Taiwan repeated Thursday its call for all parties involved in the Diaoyutai Islands dispute to show restraint, in response to reports of a Chinese aircraft entering the islands' airspace and causing an emergency response from Japan.
Earlier in the day, a Chinese plane entered the airspace over the Diaoyutais, which prompted Japan to deploy several F-15 fighter jets in response, reports said.
Asked to comment on the reports, Ministry of Foreign Affairs deputy spokesman Calvin Ho reiterated the Taiwan government stance that all sides involved in the territorial dispute over the Diaoyutais should seek peaceful resolutions to address the issue.
"We urge all parties involved to exercise self-restraint and avoid actions that will increase tensions," he said.
Reaffirming Taiwan's sovereignty over the Diaoyutais, Ho also called for all sides to pay greater attention to the East China Sea Peace Initiative proposed by President Ma Ying-jeou in August this year, which urges other claimers to shelve disputes and engage in rational dialogue, so as to jointly develop resources in the East China Sea and maintain peace and stability in the region.
Meanwhile, Ministry of National Defense spokesman Maj. Gen. Luo Shou-he said that Taiwan's military was aware of the movements of the Chinese aircraft.
