U.S. military top secret spaceplane blasts off for mystery mission 11 Dec 2012 The military's small, top-secret version of the space shuttle rocketed into orbit Tuesday for a repeat mystery mission, two years after making the first flight of its kind. The Air Force launched the unmanned spacecraft Tuesday hidden on top of an Atlas V rocket. As if on cue, clouds quickly swallowed up the rocket as it disappeared out over the ocean. [Too bad it didn't disappear, period.] The military is quiet about this new secret mission known as OTV-3, or Orbital Test Vehicle, flight No. 3. In fact, launch commentary ended 17 minutes into the flight and a news blackout followed.
Israel suspected over Iran nuclear programme inquiry leaks 10 Dec 2012 Israel is suspected of carrying out a series of leaks implicating Iran in nuclear weapons experiments in an attempt to raise international pressure on Tehran and halt its programme. Western diplomats believe the leaks may have backfired, compromising a UN-sanctioned investigation into Iran's past nuclear activities and current aspirations. The latest leak, published by the Associated Press (AP), purported to be an Iranian diagram showing the physics of a nuclear blast, but scientists quickly pointed out an elementary mistake that cast doubt on its significance and authenticity. An article in the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists declared: "This diagram does nothing more than indicate either slipshod analysis or an amateurish hoax."
Iran Says It Decoded Data From CIA Drone 10 Dec 2012 Iran's Revolutionary Guard said Monday it has decoded all of the data from an advanced CIA spy drone captured last year. The Guard's aerospace chief, Gen. Ami Ali Hajizadeh, told state-run [as opposed to corporate-run] Press TV that the RQ-170 Sentinel craft hadn't carried out missions over nuclear facilities before it went down in December 2011 near the eastern border with Afghanistan. Tehran had previously said it recovered information from the top-secret stealth aircraft, but Monday's announcement suggests technicians may have broken encryptions.
US, Britain to assist militants in Syria: Report 11 Dec 2012 The United States and Britain have decided to provide military assistance to the militants fighting the Syrian government, a report says. A Monday report by the Independent said the head of the British Armed Forces, General Sir David Richards, held a secret meeting in London a few weeks ago with military officials from France, Turkey, Qatar, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates as well as an American general. Officials from several other British government departments also hosted similar meetings and discussions with their counterparts in 'allied states' to review strategies and ways to 'help' the foreign-sponsored militants in crisis-stricken Syria.
Al-CIAduh's HSBC paymaster busted--but no jail time, of course: HSBC pays record *1.9bn fine to settle US money-laundering accusations 11 Dec 2012 HSBC was guilty of a "blatant failure" to implement anti-money laundering controls and willfully flouted US sanctions, American prosecutors said, as the bank was forced to pay a record *1.9bn (pounds1.2bn) to settle allegations it allowed terrorists to move money around the financial system. At least *881m in drug trafficking money was laundered throughout the bank's accounts. The US Senate said the bank had operated a "pervasively polluted" culture that lasted for years, allowing HSBC to move billions around the financial system for Mexican drug lords, terrorists and governments on sanctions lists. HSBC's Mexican operations moved *7bn into the US operations, for instance, which the Senate was told was tied to drug money.
Company owner pleads guilty to false statements regarding Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station repair work 07 Dec 2012 (PA) The owner of a company that repairs and provides equipment for nuclear power plants has pleaded guilty to federal charges of making false statements after the company shipped a steam leak detection monitor to Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station. The monitor Pentas Controls shipped to Peach Bottom belonged to another power plant, according to court documents. In 2010, Kevin A. Doyle, owner of Pentas Controls in Arizona, directed one of his employees to switch a broken display on a Peach Bottom monitor with a working unit from the Brunswick Nuclear plant in North Carolina, said Neil Sheehan, a spokesman for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Michigan passes anti-union 'right to work' measure over protests of thousands 11 Dec 2012 Michigan lawmakers gave final approval Tuesday to legislation that would sharply limit labor rights, passing the first of two measures over the objections of thousands of people packing the Capitol in protest. By a 58-51 vote, the Republican-led House passed a bill that would ban workplace rules that make union membership a condition of employment for government workers. A second bill, covering private-sector workers, was expected to pass later in the day, and Gov. Rick Snyder said Tuesday that he would sign the measures.
Michigan passes public sector 'right-to-work' law amid protests 11 Dec 2012 The Republican-majority Michigan legislature gave final approval on Tuesday to "right-to-work" restrictions on public sector unions in a state considered a stronghold of organized labor, as protesters chanted in the gallery and thousands rallied outside. The House passed the measure making membership and payment of union dues voluntary for public sector employees such as teachers by a 58-51 vote. The Senate approved the same bill last week so it will now go to Republican Governor Rick Snyder, who has promised to sign it into law. The public sector law was the first of two expected to be approved by the House on Tuesday.
Michigan police brace for day of 'right-to-work' protests at Capitol in Lansing 10 Dec 2012 Large numbers of Michigan State Police officers were around the Capitol building early this morning as Lansing braced for a day of protests related to controversial right-to-[not]work legislation working its way through the state Legislature. Today's protests are a precursor to much larger ones planned for Tuesday, when thousands of union activists are expected to converge at the Capitol and supporters of right-to-work legislation have also promised a strong presence there. Union members took civil disobedience training in Detroit on Saturday to prepare for the protests.
