Britain Judged Number 1 For Soft Power
The United Kingdom has been given the world’s top rating by the international magazine Monocle for its use of Soft Power.
Soft Power is a term coined in the 90s to describe how a country uses its influence without arms or bribes by employing its cultural influence.
The magazine singles out everything from Harry Potter to the new James Bond movie to give Britain its top ranking. By contrast it says the United States has slipped from number one because of an introspective year caused by internal politics and the US elections.
Monocle reserves its greatest praise for the London Olympics. It says the event was a brilliant advert for the rest of the world to see.
The magazine goes on to say: The Britain that the country has become was best summed up in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. It was also a brilliant advert to the rest of the world – shown for free in pretty much every country.”
The British High Commissioner to New Zealand ,Mrs Vicki Treadell is delighted with the Number One ranking .She says “This is welcome news and caps a great year for the UK. It is also testament to the UK’s ability to put on a great series of events. But, more importantly, it reflects our contribution more widely and our commitment across key global agenda issues where our activist approach is based around a core set of values that we uphold.”
