The European Network to
Support Rights of Palestinian Prisoners (UFree network ) is
partaking in an International conference held in Tunisia to
back Palestinian prisoners jailed in Israeli occupation
state. The conference started today, Saturday, the 10th of
November 2012 and will last for two days. A number of Human
rights and NGOs delegations in addition to freed Palestinian
prisoners, journalists and legal experts from 30 countries
are taking part in the conference.
The conference is titled “Freedom is our Assembly” is seen by organizers as a key step in the Arab world and International levels as it’s the first time to organize an event in an Arab country where the first revolution of Arab spring triggered. The significance comes from the fact that the conference is organized under the auspices of Tunisian President, Al Mjuncif Al Marzoqi. It’s expected that event will have a legal and media momentum in internationalizing the issue of Palestinian prisoners.
It is expected that Tunisian President, Al Mjunsif Al Marzoqi will inaugurate the conference. Then a number of key speakers and guests will follow across sessions.
Later a key session titled, “Western Media and Palestinian Prisoners” will be held where it will deal with the discourse of western media outlets in addressing their issue and ways to publicize the prisoners’ suffering. Then, another session would tackle the same issue but with the context of Arabic media outlets' coverage.
It is expected that both sessions would come out with certain mechanisms to publicize and broadcast the issue of Palestinian prisoners all over the world through the use of social media, documentaries and other tools.
On Sunday, the second day of the international conference, different sessions will focus on the legal side of Palestinian prisoners’ issue. It aims at proposing effective instruments to persecute Israeli occupation authorities and officials. The session will also focus on arbitrary courts and torture practices exerted against prisoners in addition to discussing their rights in accordance with the “49 Geneva Protocols” and
UFree joined a press conference organized by the preparatory committee earlier on the 8th of November 2012. Mohammed Hamdan, UFree chairman spoke at the press conference and stressed on the significance of holding such international event as it will serve the interest of the prisoners on Arabic and International level.
