Breaking: Republicans projected to retain House majority 06 Nov 2012 Republicans are projected to hold their majority in the House, according to CNN, keeping the gavel in the hands of Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio). Democrats would have needed a net gain of 25 seats to recapture the House, and early results in races across the country show them falling well short of that mark. The result is a resounding victory for House Republicans, who rode into power in the Tea Party-fueled wave election of 2010, and a bitter defeat for Democrats who had hoped to make Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) Speaker of the House once more.
Breaking: Barack Obama will win Pennsylvania, Michigan - NBC News 06 Nov 2012
Early Senate calls go to Democrats 06 Nov 2012 The first three competitive Senate races called tonight by the AP: Democratic Rep. Chris Murphy defeated GOP wrestling mogul Linda McMahon, who spent nearly $100 million of her own money on back-to-back 2010 and 2012 Senate campaigns. Florida Sen. Bill Nelson easily turned back a challenge from Republican Rep. Connie Mack, winning a third term in the Senate. Independent former Maine Gov. Angus King won the three-way race to succeed GOP Sen. Olympia Snowe. He hasn't announced which party he'd caucus with but is expected to join the Democrats.
CT, SC, other state media projections 06 Nov 2012 President Obama will win Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts and Rhode Island; Mitt Romney will win Oklahoma and South Carolina, CNN projects.
Virginia too close to call; Romney wins Indiana and Kentucky, Obama takes Vermont 06 Nov 2012 Polls closed in six states at 7 p.m. ET Tuesday, and Fox News projects Mitt Romney carrying Indiana and Kentucky, with President Obama winning Vermont. Three other states, though -- among them the key battleground of Virginia -- were too close to call. South Carolina and Georgia are the other two. In Virginia, Fox News exit polls show the race so tight that neither Romney nor Obama have even a slight lead. Ohio, another crucial battleground, will close its polls at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Voting problems reported in several states 06 Nov 2012 Americans went to the polls by the tens of millions Tuesday, and while most voted without incident, long waits, legal disputes and lingering damage from Hurricane Sandy hindered balloting in several states. In Philadelphia, some voters reported that election workers required photo identification, despite a judge's ruling last month placing Pennsylvania's tough new ID law on hold for 2012. Officials are permitted to ask for photo identification as part of a test run but not as a condition for voting. Albert Hill, 56, said he argued for 10 minutes with a poll monitor who insisted he would not be allowed to vote unless he showed his photographic identification. He said he watched two African American women leave the line in front of him because they were turned away for the same reason.
Ohio faces controversy over voting machines 06 Nov 2012 As people head to the polls today to cast their ballots, a critical "battleground" state in the presidential election faces a last-minute controversy over its voting machines. In Ohio, a lawsuit alleges that Secretary of State Suppression Jon Husted (R) and Election Systems & Software, an Omaha, Neb., company that makes electronic voting systems used in the state, improperly approved the use of untested, non-state certified software in voting machines to help tally results. The suit -- filed Monday in federal district court... claims that the software could erroneously alter election results or even lead to election fraud. According to the complaint, the suit alleges that the software could introduce mistakes into the vote count, or allow third parties to manipulate the results.
2012 election: 'Mayhem' and 6-hour waits in Miami 06 Nov 2012 Voting is continuing into the night Tuesday at a condo tower south of downtown here where "Hispanics for Obama" placards compete with an anti-communist poster taped to a palmetto bush - and where some residents say they’ve waited as long six hours to cast their ballots. "This is mayhem," said Carla Batlle of Miami, who emerged with her husband, Adrian, after an ordeal that began at 1:10 p.m. and didn’t end until almost 7. "It's a debacle. This is unorganized, unprofessional." Hundreds more were still waiting in a line snaking through the parking lot well past the official 7 p.m. EST closing time for the polls.
High traffic crashes Chicago elections website, polls now closed 06 Nov 2012 A long -- and, at times, frustrating -- day at polling places throughout Chicago ended Tuesday with voters helping decide the presidential race, the future of Congress and scores of other issues. Within the first two hours of voting, 300,000 to 400,000 Chicagoans cast ballots. Officials predicted a similar turnout to four years ago, when 73 percent of registered voters in the city went to the polls.
Sandy disrupts voting; Northeast braces for new storm 06 Nov 2012 The aftermath of Superstorm Sandy created chaos and long lines at voting stations in the U.S. Northeast on Tuesday while officials braced for a new storm due to batter the region on Wednesday. The former hurricane that walloped New York and New Jersey eight days ago continued to create misery for the thousands who lost their homes and 900,000 households and businesses that remained without power. Voters casting ballots for the U.S. president endured confusion at makeshift polling stations. In New York City's Rockaways, a badly damaged barrier island community facing the Atlantic, people whose homes were damaged or destroyed or lacked power went to vote in a tent.
Sellafield nuclear waste storage poses 'intolerable risk' 06 Nov 2012 An "intolerable risk" is being posed by hazardous waste stored in run-down buildings at Sellafield nuclear plant, a watchdog has found. The National Audit Office (NAO) also said that for 50 years, the operators of the Cumbria installation failed to develop a long-term plan for waste.Costs of plant-decommissioning has also spiralled out of control, it said.
