Ogoni Notifies President Goodluck Jonathan on Nigeria’s Obligations
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan was sent a notification and consultative Advisory, which outlines Nigeria’s
mandatory obligations to enforce the Ogoni Self Government Declaration.
The package outlines funding sources and other options to enforce the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of
Indigenous Peoples.
Speaking after a general assembly held in Teyork near Bori on Saturday, September 1, 2012 to mark the First Month
Anniversary of the Ogoni Self Government, MOSOP President/Spokesman, Dr. Goodluck Diigbo stated that a 3,829 word correspondence, which outlines Nigeria’s mandatory obligations was transmitted to the Nigerian president Goodluck Jonathan on August 7, 2012.
“The mandatory obligations sent to the presidency constituted Notification, Consultative Advisory and Early Warning requiring urgent actions for peaceful resolution on specific procedures expected of President Jonathan’s
administration,” Diigbo noted.
The electronic document, thus, automatically extended the transition period to September 8, 2012, but that the period
might be extended subject to recommendation by the Ogoni Central Indigenous Authority (OCIA).
Earlier, in a message from New York to the Assembly, Dr. Diigbo said “while freedom celebrations are usually reflected
by fireworks, parades, eating and drinking, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, sports and family reunions, the Ogoni
self government was busy consolidating and spreading awareness about the task ahead.
He disclosed that a preliminary report by the Transition Committee indicated progress on the consolidation of the Ogoni
Self Government (OSGOV).
“Those who expected bloodshed, burning down of buildings and destabilization of strategic economic installations in
Ogoni, or bombing must be very disappointed. We can’t begin to throw stone for an internal self government, when we have
choice for even higher political status, if otherwise necessary,” Diigbo concluded.
On Sunday, September 2, 2012 Church services as well as customary and traditional rituals were conducted in various
villages of Ogoni to mark the First One Month Anniversary of the Ogoni Self Government.
