PRESIDENT RAFAEL CORREA SETS THE RECORD STRAIGHT

President of Ecuador Rafael Correa has this morning strenuously denied stories published by the British media on August 14, 2012, suggesting a decision on political asylum application for Mr. Julian Assange had been reached.
President Correa made clear that no decision had been reached at a press conference in Guayaquil-Ecuador on Tuesday 14th of August when he said: “a decision has not been made yet, we are awaiting a legal report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Mr. Assange’s case and we will analyze if we proceed or not with his asylum application”.
And he went on to say “However, when we make a decision, we will explain all the legal arguments to grant or not asylum”
President Rafael Correa has also reiterated his pledge for transparency in the decision making process by offering to explain how the decision was be taken regarding Mr.Assanges’s request once it has been made.
Julian Assange took refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London on June 19, 2012 and awaits the decision of the authorities about his asylum request.

El Presidente de Ecuador Rafael Correa ha negado la información publicada por un medio británico el 14 de Agosto, 2012 en el cual se comenta que se ha tomado la decisión de dar asilo político al señor Julián Assange.
En una conferencia de prensa en Guayaquil –Ecuador, este martes 14 de agosto el Presidente Correa aclaró que no se ha tomado ninguna decisión todavía, y también puntualizó: “Aún no se ha tomado una decisión, estamos a la espera de un informe jurídico de Cancillería sobre la situación del señor Assange y analizaremos si es o no procedente al asilo”
Luego agregó que “Cuando tomemos una decisión, explicaremos de una forma perfectamente clara los argumentos que utilizamos, el marco jurídico para otorgarle o no el asilo al señor Julián Assange”
Julián Assange está refugiado en la Embajada ecuatoriana en Londres desde el pasado 19 de Junio, 2012 a la espera de que las autoridades de Cancillería respondan a su solicitud de asilo.
