In a June 25 decision, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Argentina’s favor to unfreeze over $100 million USD in Argentine assets shored up in the New York Federal Deposit Bank and claimed by Elliott Associates and Dart Management during lawsuits surrounding defaulted bonds. In coming to Argentina's defense, Washington has set an important precedent in regulating international business based in the United States as well as affirmed that foreign policy could possibly stand above corporate interests.

Legalize Abortion, Save Lives
Strong legislative efforts have failed to prevent the approximately 4 million abortions that take place in Latin America annually, very few of which can be considered legal due to the region’s draconian abortion laws. Deeply ingrained social stigmas surrounding abortion and governmental restrictions push many women to seek extralegal, often dangerous, methods to terminate their unwanted pregnancies. This leads to approximately 4,000 preventable deaths and 800,000 hospitalizations annually in the region, rates significantly higher than global averages.

Brazilian Federal University Professors on Strike
Brazilian professors have banded together to strike against the government's failure to implement promised reforms. Led by a union comprised of 60 representatives from 43 universities, the teachers' demands include wage increases and improved working conditions. COHA’s research associates interviewed two striking professors, Dr. Paulo Sergio da Costa Neves and Dr. Israel Roberto Barnabe.
