Foreign Ambassadors Travel to Wyoming for Experience America Trip

United States Chief of Protocol Capricia Penavic Marshall will lead the Department of State’s latest Experience America trip to Wyoming with members of the Diplomatic Corps and their spouses from July 13-16, 2012. Nearly two dozen ambassadors representing countries on five continents will spend three days learning about Wyoming’s remarkable history, exploring its environmental wonders, engaging with experts about conservation efforts, and interacting with the state’s public and private sector leaders.

The Office of the Chief of Protocol has organized a unique and exciting trip in which members of the Diplomatic Corps will visit Cody, Jackson, Moose, Moran, as well as Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. By sharing Wyoming’s story and landscape with these distinguished diplomats, we are strengthening America’s relationship with countries around the world by providing our visitors with a deeper understanding of our nation’s people, heritage, and history.

On Friday, July 13, the program will kick-off with a welcome dinner at the Murie Center in Moose, WY. On Saturday, July 14, the Ambassadors will explore Grand Teton National Park and participate in a search and rescue briefing by the Jenny Lake Rangers. They will then travel to the Jackson Lake Lodge in Moran, WY to learn about the historical significance of the National Park System to the United States. This meeting will include a taped video address by former Secretary of State James A. Baker III, who will discuss his bilateral meetings with former Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze during the Wyoming Ministerial in September of 1989. In the evening, the Diplomatic Corps will learn about the critical role of public-private partnerships in the creation and preservation of Yellowstone National Park at the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center. On Sunday, July 15, the Diplomatic Corps will explore Yellowstone National Park and will travel to Cody, WY to explore the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. On Monday, July 16, the Ambassadors will meet with Sir James Wolfensohn, former President of the World Bank, in Jackson, WY to discuss the importance of conservation and preservation of natural resources.

Experience America is organized by the Diplomatic Partnerships Division of the Office of the Chief of Protocol, whose mission is to foster international goodwill and cultivate the relationship between the Diplomatic Corps and the people and institutions of the United States through an exchange of ideas, cultures, and traditions. This is the tenth Experience America trip and sixth of this Administration. Previous destinations include Los Angeles, New Orleans, New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, as well as multiple cities in Alaska, California, Florida and Texas. Since 2009, nearly 100 countries have participated in Experience America trips.
