The Israeli authorities set political prisoner Mahmoud Sarsak free after the longest individual hunger strike that lasted for 96 days.

In a press release for UFree Network, Sarsak, who is now in Al Shifa hospital in Gaza, said that despite he was a hunger striker, he managed by his steadfastness to force the Israeli occupation to accept his conditions that he launched a hunger strike for.

Mahmoud added, "My demands were represented in not recognizing the non-combatant law, which was issued by the Israeli military court, and releasing me to my home city, Rafah in Gaza Strip". During his strike, Sarsak totally rejected many offers to expel him outside Gaza Strip.

Concerning international and local support, Sarsk appreciated the role of all human rights organizations that supported him and spread his plight in both Arab and international arenas. He also praised the efforts of European organizations that introduce sufferings of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

UFree chairman, Mohammed Hamdan said that Sarsak's release represents the equity of Palestinian prisoners' plight and their right to return to their families and relatives.

Hamdan says that UFree Network organised a campaign to support Mahmoud Sarsak during his arrest, such campaign succeeded in reaching several European organizations and parliaments.

It is worth mentioning that on 18/6/2012, Mahmoud Sarsak managed to sign an agreement with Israeli Prison Service to set him free on 10/7/2012 in return of ending his 96-day consecutive hunger strike.
