Promoting Gender, Partnerships And Sustainability at Rio
IUCN, UNDESA AND UNEP Promote Gender,
Partnerships And Sustainability At Rio
Background: Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, 21 June, 2012 (IUCN) – Around
the world, progress on gender equality has been achieved in
many areas, yet the potential for women to engage in and
contribute to sustainable development more effectively as
leaders, participants and agents of change has not been
fully realized. The promotion of gender equality and the
structural reform associated with it, more often than not
requires leveraging effective, multi-stakeholder
partnerships and alliances that can act within and across
boundaries.
IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature), UNDESA (United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs) and UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) will use the opportunity presented by Rio+20 to reenergize, revitalize and strengthen the case of partnerships as effective vehicles for implementation and action on gender and sustainable development.
Key Issues:
•
Thanks to work conducted over the past twenty years,
our understanding of the link between gender and sustainable
development is stronger than ever. “IUCN, UNDESA
and UNEP have convened the global leaders in gender and
sustainable development and we are looking forward to
concrete recommendations on gender-sensitive goals and
indicators to be considered as inputs to the agreements at
Rio+20 and as a contribution to the discussions on the
post-2015 development agenda,” says Lorena
Aguilar, Senior Global Gender Adviser, IUCN Global Gender
Office. “What is crucial after Rio is to make
sure that we keep the momentum up and that we influence
current and future sustainability processes effectively and
strategically.”
