HMAS Newcastle to Visit Auckland
What: The Royal Australian Navy’s Adelaide Class Frigate HMAS Newcastle will visit Auckland, NZ to participate in ANZAC Day and take the opportunity for some rest and recreation for the ship’s
company, following exercises off the West Australian coast and passage to New Zealand.
When:10 am Tuesday 24 April until Sunday 29 April 2012.
Where: Queen’s Wharf East, Auckland, New Zealand.
Who:Commander Anthony Campbell, RAN, Commanding Officer HMAS Newcastle, will be available for interview shortly after the ship berths.
Fresh from conducting exercises with HMNZ Ships Te Kaha and Endeavour off the coast of Western Australia the Royal Australian Navy Guided Missile Frigate HMAS Newcastle, will visit Auckland for five days commencing 1000 24 April.
The RAN and the RNZN share a long and proud history which continues today as sailors selflessly serve their country in
our immediate region and beyond. The ANZAC forces worked together during the Gallipoli campaign and continue to
collaborate in the same spirit now to protect our shared National interests.
The ship’s company looks forward to the opportunity to spend ANZAC Day in New Zealand and share in the commemoration of
this important day in both our Nations’ history. Newcastle’s ships company will participate in memorial services in Devonport and Auckland City.
Newcastle will be operating in New Zealand waters for a few weeks with HMAS Warramunga conducting advanced navigation training.
Newcastle is one of four Adelaide Class frigates in the Australian Navy’s fleet. It was built in Williamstown, VIC and
commissioned in 1993. Newcastle is a long range guided missile frigate capable of air defence, surface and undersea warfare, surveillance,
reconnaissance and interdiction. The ship can counter simultaneous threats from aircraft, surface vessels and
submarines.
Newcastle will not be open to the public during this visit.
