IWD Community Media Campaign: Women's Priorities
IWD Community Media Campaign Highlights Women's Economic Security Priorities (Fiji)
March 6, 2012
"Another interesting day of listening and learning about what women here go through to take care of their families. How to make ends meet to provide food for their families," says FemLINKPacific's rural focal Paulin Fong Chowdhury.
It was Day 2 of FemLINKPacific's Community Radio Campaign for International Women's Day 2012 with the three "suitcase" radio stations of FemTALK 89FM broadcasting from 3 Labasa, Nausori and Suvathey linking listeners in a 10 kilometre broadcast radius to programmes addressing women in local government, faith based women leaders and women in decision making.
In interactive dialogue sessions with leaders of local women's clubs, the community radio campaign continue to link to the theme of the current UN Commission on the Status of Women.
Today representatives of the women's clubs from the Vunimono and Nausori Villages highlightedd the need for women to access financial literacy programmes, particularly to enhance savings:
"Women would like to be able to better manage their financial resources, especially what they earn from lease payments," reports Jima Luvunakoro, FemLINKPacific's rural correspondent for Nausori, "It made me think about my role as a wife and mother as well."
FemLINKPacific's IWD Community Radio campaign is supported by the International Women's Development Agency. Support for the rural community media network is provided by the European Union and the UNDP Capacity for Peace and Development small grant scheme.
The campaign will include a 2 hour television simulcast from 12noon to 2pm on MaiTV on March 8.
Meanwhile, the official UN observance for International Women’s Day, with the theme “Empower Rural Women: End Poverty and Hunger,” will be held at UN Headquarters in New York on 7 March, 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
According to a press release from UNWomen, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will address the event along with other high-level officials and activists who work on issues related to rural women worldwide. Ms. Bachelet will join the gathering through a video message.
