United States Chief of Protocol Capricia Penavic Marshall will lead the Obama Administration’s latest Experience America trip to Los Angeles with members of the Diplomatic Corps and their spouses from February 28th – March 2nd, 2012. Nearly 50 ambassadors representing countries spanning five continents will spend three days learning about the history, economy, and people of Los Angeles, engaging with leaders from across the business and entertainment industries, and learning about the city’s innovative and entrepreneurial projects.
Working closely with Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and many other public and private sector officials and organizations in the city and county of Los Angeles, the Office of the Chief of Protocol has organized a substantive and unique trip to plant the seeds of new international partnerships; build connections with the people of Los Angeles; and provide our visitors with a deeper understanding of America’s people, culture, and institutions.
On Tuesday February 28th, the program will kick off with a welcome dinner at the J. Paul Getty Museum co-hosted by Mayor Villaraigosa. On Wednesday, February 29th the ambassadors will attend a breakfast hosted by the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, tour the Port of Los Angeles and visit Inner-City Arts – one of the nation's most effective arts education providers. The ambassadors' spouses will also visit the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.
On Thursday March 1st, the ambassadors will explore present day Los Angeles through conversations with leaders in the entertainment industry – visiting the Creative Artists Agency, Warner Brothers, Paramount, and Universal Studios.
Friday, March 2nd will focus on the future of Los Angeles – the social, economical, and technological innovations based in the city by visiting the University of Southern California’s Stevens Institute for Innovation and CODA Automotive.
Experience America is organized by the Diplomatic Partnerships Division of the Office of the Chief of Protocol, whose mission is to foster international goodwill and cultivate the relationship between the Diplomatic Corps and the people and institutions of the United States through an exchange of ideas, cultures, and traditions. This is the ninth Experience America trip and fifth of this Administration. Previous destinations included New York City, Chicago, Atlanta, New Orleans, and multiple cities in California, Texas, Florida and Alaska.
