Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board Meeting Atlanta Feb 9-10

On February 9-10, 2012, the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board will hold its quarterly meeting in Atlanta, Georgia. Established by the U.S. Congress and appointed by the President of the United States, the board sets worldwide policies for the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange; selects the students, scholars, teachers, and other participants; and promotes the program around the globe.

On February 9 at the Carter Center and Presidential Museum, the board will join a group of 140 international Fulbright students from more than 80 countries who are studying at colleges and universities across the United States. The students will participate in a four-day Fulbright Enrichment Seminar: “The Power of Words: Media, Civil Rights and U.S. Elections” to network with citizens and community leaders, as well as with other international Fulbright students in the United States. Board Chairman Tom Healy will deliver opening remarks at 8:00 p.m. in the Cyprus Room at the Carter Center.

On February 10, the board will hold a public meeting at the Atlanta University Center’s Woodruff Library from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A panel discussion, Diversity In The Fulbright Program: Challenge And Opportunity, will feature scholars from Atlanta and abroad, as well as US. Department of State officials.

On February 11, Board Chairman Tom Healy and Atlanta-based Board Member and former Vice Chair Dr. Shelby F. Lewis, will join Fulbrighters in a community service project from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The event is sponsored by Forward Together in partnership with Hands On Atlanta and United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta.

All those events are open to the media.

Dr. Shelby F. Lewis - Professor Emeritus, Clark Atlanta University

Anita B. McBride - Executive in Residence, Center for Presidential and Congressional Studies, School of Public Affairs, American University.

The Fulbright Program, sponsored by the Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is supported by the United States and partner countries around the world. Since 1946, over 310,000 Fulbrighters from more than 155 countries have studied, taught, conducted research, exchanged ideas and contributed to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
