Major Landslide Claims 60 Lives In Papua New Guinea

More than 60 villagers have been buried alive and many more remain unaccounted for following a major landslide in Papua New Guinea’s highlands early yesterday morning.

The landslide, which was about a kilometre in length and 300 meters wide, has cut off transport and services to the area – affecting more than 50,000 people.

World Vision has been in contact with the National Disaster Centre to find out how it can assist. The aid agency’s humanitarian and emergency affairs manager in PNG Gereard Van Gramberg says a government team is currently on site assessing the situation. Mr Gramberg says the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) will call a meeting with all relief agencies once the team reports back later today.

Authorities and companies working in the area, including PNG Liquefied Natural Gas, are assisting with the retrieval of bodies and providing additional support where needed.
