European Union Statement on Fiji

Wellington, 9 January 2012

EU Statement on Fiji

The European Union Delegation issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in Fiji and the EU Heads of Mission in Australia and New Zealand accredited to Fiji.

The EU Delegation welcomes the lifting of the Public Emergency Regulations on 7th January as announced by the Fiji interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama in his New Year Address and in particular looks forward to the beginning of an inclusive public consultation process for a new constitution as announced at the same occasion.

The lifting of the Emergency Regulations is an important step towards the re-establishment of democracy and holding of credible and transparent elections. Fiji is a key country in EU relations with the Pacific and the EU looks forward to the re-establishment of democracy as well as to the presentation of further details on the process leading to credible and transparent elections in Fiji with the view of supporting this process together with other regional and international partners.
