Romney wins Iowa caucuses by 8 votes 04 Jan 2012 The chairman of the Iowa Republican party has said Mitt Romney has won [sic] the Iowa caucuses by eight votes. Chairman Matt Strawn made the announcement of the razor-thin margin in the opening contest in the campaign to pick a challenger to President Barack Obama in Des Moines. Mr Romney, former governor of Massachusetts, narrowly edged out former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum. Mr Strawn said Mr Romney received 30,015 votes and Mr Santorum 30,007. [Oops! Looks like Karl Rove was off by 6 in his math. He had it set for Romney to win by 14, but alas, alak - he won by only 8.]

Taliban leaders held at Guantánamo Bay to be released in peace talks deal 03 Jan 2012 The US has agreed in principle to release high-ranking Taliban officials from Guantánamo Bay in return for the Afghan insurgents' agreement to open a political office for peace negotiations in Qatar, the Guardian has learned. According to sources familiar with the talks in the US and in Afghanistan, the handful of Taliban figures will include Mullah Khair Khowa, a former interior minister, and Noorullah Noori, a former governor in northern Afghanistan. More controversially, the Taliban are demanding the release of the former army commander Mullah Fazl Akhund.

Suspicious package, white powder at Navy SEAL Museum 03 Jan 2012 (FL) The National Navy SEAL Museum on North Hutchinson Island and the surrounding county park were closed and evacuated Tuesday, after museum staff reported a suspicious package and powder. Around 9:49 a.m. St. Lucie County Sheriff's Deputies responded to the museum located at 3300 North Highway A1A after an unknown substance was found in a package. Hazmat crews were called to the scene and the building was evacuated while officials investigated.

White powder sent to Fla. gov't office sickens 4 03 Jan 2012 Part of the Florida state attorney's office was evacuated Tuesday an envelope containing white powder that sent several workers and a responding firefighter to the hospital. According to CBS affiliate WPEC in West Palm Beach, Fla., police got a call around 9 a.m. from the office in West Palm Beach saying an envelope in the mail room was found with a white powder.
