A number of Palestinian prisoners including women and children were released on Sunday as part of the final phase in the prisoners exchange deal between Israel and Palestinian factions.
One of the released prisoners includes 18 year old female Bushra Altaweel, for whom UFree had been campaigning for since her illegal detention. She had been under an administrational imprisonment for more than 5 months.
Altaweel says that the conditions of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails are worsening every day – particularly emphasising the lack of health care and treatment of minor prisoners.
She called on the international community to take urgent action to release all Palestinian prisoners and to pressure the Israeli occupation to abide by international law.
Mohammed Hamdan, chairman of UFree welcomed the release of Altaweel and many others. He condemned the lack of standards when it came to dealing with prisoners and the policy of random and illegal arrests against women and children.
Meanwhile, more than 5,000 Palestinian prisoners remain in Israeli jails -- including more than 110 children, 5 women and 22 elected members of the Palestinian Legislative Council.
UFree joins with other human rights organizations to continue a global campaign to press the Israeli occupation to release all political prisoners, and to treat those still in custody humanely and according to international law.
